Differences between style correction and spelling correction

Writing can come out of many moments, knowledge, thoughts, opinions, experiences, ideas and muses. Of course, before publishing, it is necessary to find a very good reason to do so and to give real importance to the revision: style correction and orthotypography are the ones that ultimately ensure quality. The first is always recommended and the second is essential.

An editorial project manages to be professional with the accompaniment of a trained and meticulous proofreader, someone who helps the text to be as clean as possible. For this reason, the work of a proofreader can never be equated to the act of passing a text through the Word proofreader or entrusting the autocorrect of cell phones and other electronic devices.

Just as on a highway full of vehicles it is rare that there are no crashes, in writing texts what is abnormal is not having faults. The error is within reach of the fingers and occurs in a moment of deconcentration or haste, being elusive in the midst of the readings and rereadings that are made to a text of its own that ends up becoming landscape. The eye, deceitful by nature, must be educated.

Sometimes there is an obvious temptation to review what we say and not how we do it, the message and not the form. Grammar, led by the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language, is renewed or at least tries to adapt to the new times, since it is not something static that does not need to be updated.

A good product depends on each author, so presenting it very well should be an offering to the reader, never an offense. A hand is not enough, so having someone to browse our written material and watch us closely is essential. The corrector minimizes errors, as simple as that.

If the decision of the writer is that their texts see the light from a self-publishing process (also known as self-publishing or author editing), which consists of the publication of a book or any other content by its author without the intervention of As an editor or proofreader, the very least you should do is understand the definition, difference, and importance of spelling and style correction (and try to apply them).

After making the style correction, we proceed with the orthotypography. At the beginning of the second, the grammatical and lexical errors must already be resolved.

The style fix

It’s more about the act of crossing out, using highlighter or going into Liquid Paper mode. It is something that can and even should contribute, without the need to change backgrounds or forms, content, styles or nature. The style correction helps to improve the lexicon and the use of the vocabulary, while avoiding vices of the language (queismo and dequeismo, for example), fillers, redundancies, grammatical errors. It is used with the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčensuring that the rules are complied with while solving syntactic inconsistencies (agreement, correlation of verb tenses, etc.). In addition, it favors the good use of connectors and punctuation marks. Of course, this work should be delivered with the change control activated so that the client can accept or reject the proposed reforms. Here grammatical mistakes and syntactic inconsistencies are pointed out and combated, it is given the touch so that it sounds natural, real, close and zero forced. The proofreader doesn’t know everything, but he knows where to look and who to ask.

Spelling correction

With this work it is unified seeking to give coherence. It focuses on retouching the spelling and punctuation problems that have survived the proofreading, based on the current spelling rules. Here, isolated lines at the beginning and end of the page (widows and orphans), repetition of syllables in consecutive lines and badly divided words, double spaces or excessively large blanks between words are avoided. There is also a review of graphic elements, of the alignment of rows and columns of the tables, of the numbering (figures, notes, epigraphs, etc.), of the foliation (header and footer), of the bibliography, of the category of titles with their type of letter and the concordance of the summary with the writing. Here the use of the typographic resources that the text needs in order to unify them (italics, bold or quotation marks) is defined. It is convenient to make this type of correction on artwork already designed (in PDF, for example).
