Summertime in Playa del Carmen is a bustling season full of tourists and locals alike enjoying the sunny weather and crystal-clear waters. If you’re looking for something exciting during your stay, check out this list of activities ranging from exploring ancient ruins to swimming with dolphins!
List of Activities to Enjoy in Playa del Carme
Stroll Along the Famous 5th Avenue
The 5th Avenue in Playa del Carme is the city’s main shopping street. It costs nothing to stroll down the 5-mile-long pedestrian-only walkway dedicated to all of your touristic needs. However, it’s great for shopping, eating, drinking, and souvenirs. Mexico, on the whole, is cheap no matter where you go compared to the states or the UK. If you are looking for somewhere on a budget, head a street or two back from the beach, and you’ll have an endless array of other cheaper options.
Go Cenote Diving or Snorkelling
A meteorite hit the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico more than 100 years ago, creating hundreds of beautiful crystal-clear freshwater cenotes, or sinkholes. In the Yucatán Peninsula area of Mexico, there are natural ‘sinkholes’ filled with crystal clear freshwater. One, in particular, Cenote Azul, is excellent for adults and children. It’s only 15 minutes from downtown by taxi. Here are lifejackets and snorkelling gear available for rent for an extra fee. Cenote Azul has restrooms onsite and a snack hut. The best time to visit is amid the week, Mon-Fri when crowds aren’t as busy as on weekends.
Enjoy Xcaret or Xel-Ha
There are many differences between Xel-Ha and Xcaret, but both resorts offer lush wildlife and clear waters. Xel-Ha is a favourite because it’s all-inclusive, which includes all food and drink!
There are a lot of free live music bars in Playa del Carmen, which can save you money if you’re looking for a fun place for a night out. ‘Caiman’ is one of my favourite bars around town; their drinks are plentiful and cheap, and it’s always packed with locals who love the music and dancing. 12th Street is where most tourists like to go if they want to party loudly while they’re here; most clubs have an entry fee. Coco Bongo is one of my favourite clubs, which has live music and club nights every week. If loud music isn’t your thing, other places on Playa offer more relaxation after dark!
Swim with Sea Turtles
If you hate swimming in the sea, this experience can change you for life! Swimming can be a fantastic opportunity to test your tours to the deep end and step out of that comfort zone – an opportunity you’ll be super grateful for. Swimming alongside sea turtles will leave you enchanted by the ocean’s many wonders. It can be a day you will never forget for the rest of your life.
Go Paragliding in Playa del Carme
Parasailing is quite a fun activity that can be done in Playa del Carmen, and for a good reason: it’s fun! If you’re near the main beach in downtown Playa, you will no doubt see someone parasailing along the glistening ocean. The views are unrivalled as you fly above the water. If you like adventure but don’t want to go as far as skydiving or jump out of a plane, this is the activity for you. Parasailing is relaxing once you are up in the air; you can even dip your toes in the water before rising into the sky again.
Playa del Carmen is a beautiful place to visit, and plenty of activities keep you busy. From exploring the Mayan ruins to snorkelling in the clear blue waters, there’s something for everyone.
