HANDS OFF ASSATA!

Intro:  Below are posted links for a documentary, Eyes of the Rainbow,  featuring interviews with Assata Shakur.  This week, Assata was added to the “most wanted terrorist” list by the Federal Bureau of Intimidation.  This designation, coming from a Federal agency that was neck-deep in COINTELPRO frame ups and assassinations of activists in the Black Liberation Movement is on its face ridiculous.

The US government, which has sponsored terrorist attacks on the people of Cuba for decades, has no business designating Assata a terrorist. Assata, a modest woman who lives quietly in Cuba (a country which gave her asylum) is no threat to anyone in the United States.   We should see this $2 million bounty for what it is — the equivalent of the bounty placed on “runaway” slaves by the slaveholders.  The FBI says that Assata is an “ongoing threat” to the United States. Yet, they cannot tie her to any such terrorist activity.  The US, however, has been complicit in a campaign of bombings, assassinations and destabilization aimed directly at the Cuban people.  Where is Luis Posadas Carriles, responsible for the bombing of a Cuban airliner that killed 73 people?  Living out his days in Miami.

The Obama administration continues to label Cuba as a country that sponsors terrorism, in spite of the fact that Cuba has never once been proven to have sponsored an attack on a US citizen or territory.

In the context of the continued destruction of democratic rights at home and US imperialist wars at home; anyone who resists risks being labeled a “terrorist” who can be targeted for imprisonment or assassination and without any recourse to due process.

Assata Shakur in her own words:

“My name is Assata (“she who struggles”) Olugbala ( “for the people” ) Shakur (“the thankful one”), and I am a 20th century escaped slave. Because of  government persecution, I was left with no other choice than to flee from the political repression, racism and violence that dominate the US government’s policy towards people of color. I am an ex political prisoner, and I have been living in exile in Cuba since 1984. I have been a political activist most of my life, and although the U.S. government has done everything in its power to criminalize me, I am not a criminal, nor have I ever been one.

In the 1960s, I participated in various struggles: the black liberation movement, the student rights movement, and the movement to end the war in Vietnam. I  joined the Black Panther Party. By 1969, the Black Panther Party had become the number one organization targeted by the FBI’s COINTELPRO program. because the Black Panther Party demanded the total liberation of black people, J. Edgar  Hoover called it “greatest threat to the internal security of the country” and  vowed to destroy it and its leaders and activists.”
