Prison. Prison life has become a myth because of movies and TV, but these stories aren’t always true. There’s no question, though, that prison is not a place you want to be. Except when you’re playing a video game.
You can live out many different prison fantasies in video games. You can build a prison, run one, watch over one, break out of one, or break into one, among other things. Video game prisons can be realistic or made up, based on real life or set in the future. In video games, you can go to a lot of different prisons.
Twin Caliber
Twin Caliber is a horror twin-stick shooter game that can be played alone or with a friend. You play as either a Sheriff or a prisoner, and you have to work together to get off a prison island that has been taken over by scary monsters.
Twin Caliber is just one of many games that make being in jail a really scary place to be. You can’t really look around much in the prison, though, because the game is on rails and you can only shoot at enemies. During the scary adventure, you explore many parts of the prison, from the cellblocks to the yard to the surrounding forests and other parts of the scary island.
The Suffering
The Suffering is a scary prison game like The Walking Dead. In this game, you play as Torque, who is on death row and spending his last days at Abbott State Penitentiary on Carnate Island. When hell breaks out on the island, you have to fight your way to freedom by fighting demons and monsters and finding out the prison and island’s secrets.
With The Suffering, you can go everywhere in the prison. You go to places like the quarry, the death chamber, the psychiatric wing, and more besides the usual prison cell blocks and yards. In The Suffering, the prison is complex and full of details. It has a dark history that is waiting to be found.
Prisoner of War
In Prisoner of War, you play as Captain Stone, an American pilot who was shot down during World War II. He now has to decide whether to stay in a POW camp for the rest of the war or try to escape and fight the Nazis again.
In Prisoner of War, the famous Castle Colditz POW camp from World War II comes to life. Each prison has its own set of prisoners, guards, and Commandants, all of whom are different. All of them look and feel different, and the weather and rules are different in each one. Even though Prisoner of War has a linear main story, it gives you a lot of room to explore and live out a fantastic POW life.
The Callisto Protocol
Black Iron Prison on the planet Callisto is the setting for The Callisto Protocol. Like in other horror-themed prison games, monsters break out and you have to fight them to get out.
As you move through the prison, you can talk to the remaining prisoners, explore the different wings, which all have a science fiction or horror twist, and find out where Black Iron came from. On the property, there was once a laboratory, a colony, and lots of other hidden things.
The Escapists (Series)
You make a character in The Escapists, and then you have to figure out how to get out of several prisons. You can buy or steal things from other inmates. You can also do them favors in exchange for tools and goods. As long as your fellow inmates like you, they’ll keep helping you try to get out of jail.
You can work out, read in the library, work off your crimes, eat every day, and do other things. The Escapists is not only a simulation of life in prison, but also of getting out of prison. Guards respond to what you do, watch you, make you go to roll call, and try to keep you locked up. 8 Ball Pool is one of the best games to play if you want to know what it’s like to be in prison without actually going there.
Prison Architect
If you don’t want to go to jail, you can play Prison Architect instead. In this game, you get a certain amount of money to use to build and run your own prison. You have to run the prison, which means making sure it has enough water, electricity, and room for new prisoners.
The game Prison Architect makes you think. You can hire people to do different jobs, but each person has their own skills. You must carefully keep track of your income and expenses and make changes as needed. You can be a strict, cruel governor, or you can be the nicest governor in the world.
The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
You play as Riddick, who is played by Vin Diesel, in The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. As the name says, you have to get out of Butcher Bay. It tells how the main character, Riddick, came to be before he showed up in the movies.
Butcher Bay is a science-fiction prison with many levels. On the surface, you start in a fairly normal, if somewhat dirty, prison complex. As you keep trying to get away, you are moved to wings with more security. There is a dark underground prison with harsher living conditions, and there is a wing that you can’t see until the stasis wears off.
A Way Out
Only part of A Way Out takes place in a prison. You and your friend play as Leo and Vincent, two convicted criminals. When the game starts, you and your partner are both in jail, and you have to come up with a way to get out. You take things from guards and fight with other prisoners.
After you get out of prison, the rest of the game is about making sure you stay free. You run for your life, fight the police, and run into old friends. In A Way Out, the prison is very detailed, but you don’t spend much time there because most of the game takes place after the escape.
Resident Evil – Code: Veronica
In Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, Claire Redfield is locked up in a prison run by the Umbrella Corporation after getting caught while investigating it. Like in other horror-themed prison games and Resident Evil games, monsters are let loose and you have to fight them.
It’s not easy to stay alive in the chaos. Claire must work with another prisoner, Steve Burnside, to fight for her freedom. You finally get away on a seaplane, but you end up at another Umbrella facility that is also full of zombies.
Batman: Arkham Asylum
While the Joker is being taken back to Arkham Asylum, a bad plan is made to trap Batman inside the prison/hospital complex with many inmates who all want to kill him. In Batman: Arkham Asylum, you go through each wing of the prison, putting things back in order and regaining control of the island facility bit by bit.
Arkham Asylum has a long, dark history that you learn about as you run through it. There are Easter eggs and secrets, documents and reports, guards and inmates to talk to, and more. Each wing has its own look and style, as well as a specific job. Each important prisoner even has a cell that is just for them. Arkham Asylum is one of the most complicated video game prisons ever made.
